This is why our Carbon Footprint Friends pack contains the above
Wash your hair with a bar of shampoo & Switch from shower gel to soap – Why?
Traditional shampoo and shower gel is 80-90% water. Then it’s packaged in plastic, it’s larger to transport, so has a much larger Carbon Footprint. Generally it’s more expensive so you’ll save money as well as plastic. Soaps tend to have more natural ingredients especially if you can find one made by smaller, local brands.
Plant some pollinator friendly flowers – Why?
Over 75% of all flowering plants on earth need help from pollinators. Here are a few foods we could lose without pollinators: bananas, chocolate, strawberries and tomatoes. Below we have added some tips from The Grass People – who’s seeds we have been using in our projects for some time which is why we have used them in our pack, plus now is a great time to get planting.
‘The best time to sow wildflower seeds is in autumn as this will give you the earliest display of wildflowers. However, wildflower seeds can be sown throughout the year with bloom usually taking place after 60-80 days. It may be the case that the first bloom may be after the first winter of the seeds being in the soil’
Buy fair trade coffee, tea and chocolate – Why?
Look out for the Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance logos on the pack. Fair trade programs ensure that the farmers get a fair price for their products. The Fairtrade premium can be spent on local infrastructure and education which benefits local communities. Fair trade also covers environmental standards including carbon emissions and soil quality.
Grow your own herbs
Why not try growing our herb seeds from your window ledge. We have chosen Basil, one of the fastest growing herbs. The average plant garners 1/2 cup of leaves a week. The hardy seasoning is known for growing fuller with each clipping, so frequent use is key to the little plant’s survival. Growing your own means no miles. Some herbs are airfreighted which is the most environmentally damaging way to transport food.

Eco Communities is a new organisation created by members of a very successful campaign in Chester to become plastic free. It currently runs on a voluntary basis.
The goal of Eco Communities is to work on creating a resource for individuals and businesses to become more sustainable.
Eco Communities have linked with Giki a Carbon Footprint platform with similar aims to support a sustainable future. We launched our Carbon Footprint Friends project to support you looking at how you can make a difference, reduce your Carbon Footprint and support the goals surrounding the Climate Emergency.
We do this through an education programme and now our new Carbon Footprint Friend kits and products here on The Kind Shop.
